NEWS: Canada Car Insurance rates to go up

TORONTO — Auto insurance premiums are en route upward after several years of stability or decline, ING Canada Inc. signalled Wednesday.

ING, which describes itself as the largest property and casualty insurer in Canada, expects to raise car insurance rates this year, citing rising costs in Ontario and legal uncertainty in Alberta.

Vehicle premiums “are likely to rise in 2008” although profitability has brightened since 2003 thanks to cost-limiting changes in various provincial laws, said Charles Brindamour, promoted Jan. 1 to CEO of ING Canada, majority owned by ING Group of the Netherlands, which separately owns the ING Direct branchless bank.

Brindamour said the car insurance business has been jolted by a Feb. 8 Alberta court ruling that a $4,000 cap on pain-and-suffering awards from soft-tissue injuries is unconstitutional.

The Alberta government is appealing but “there is uncertainty about the ultimate outcome,” Brindamour said during a conference call to discuss ING Canada’s 2007 results.

In addition, accident benefit and bodily injury claims in Ontario have risen. He estimated that rates in the province declined two per cent last year, but ING — operating under the ING and Grey Power brands — raised rates in September and has applied for further hikes in the first half of this year.

“While ING Canada is not a core business of the group — and this is not new — it continues to be a very profitable investment for ING,” he said.

What is Renters Insurance exactly?

Renters Insurance, the term is a bit confusing to many, people sometimes think that when they rent a property that is insured, everything inside the property gets automatically insured as well. For example I know a certain gentleman who decided to rent a property (which was an apartment) and thought the same, but when he became the victim of a theft, things turned out to be way different than he imagined.

The insurance company through which the landlord had got the apartment insured, turned down the claim citing that they did not cover thefts if the property was rented out. The person I am talking about then decided that it was time to go for renters insurance. This is the type of insurance that covers all the stuff you have in your house which you have rented from a landlord, this would mean insurance against all types of damages to the things you have in your rented property.

This type of insurance is very important to people who live in rented places. Since it covers you for any damages occurring due to fire, thefts, vandalism or any other type of accidents. And once again I'd like to remind everyone that in most of the cases, the landlord's insurance will NOT cover the things you own!

Oh and by the way, many people believe that Renters Insurance costs way too much and is a hassle not worth handling, people need to understand that Renters Insurance isn't too costly at all and it is very much necessary if you are living on rented property.

Why is Travel Insurance important?

A lot of people ask me, since I'm an insurance agent, that why does one require Travel Insurance? They tell me that sure its a good way to be safe and all that, but why does one need to have insurance while travelling? after all its all for fun isn't it? why drag the papers in and not just go out there and have fun? So today I decided to whip up an article on this, telling people why Travel Insurance is important.

When you go out and travel, things really are much more uncertain than they seem at first. You don't know what kind of people you will meet, you don't know what intentions they might have and you don't know what will your eventual fate be, in our normal lives, a lot is pretty much predetermined, if you will perform X action you'll receive Y reaction. But while travelling, life is pretty much uncertain as I explained above.

Now you see, this is why you need travel insurance, what would happen if while on travel you got hurt? There is nobody around to help you, you know and you might not have enough money to pay up for the health expenses. Travel Insurance helps here! Then, in the other possibilities, your luggage might go missing and get stolen, how will you survive? Well, Travel insurance comes to the rescue yet again!

So practically, there are millions of reasons why you do need some Travel insurance done, it is not blasphemy you know, it is one of the most important insurances in my honest opinion though. And like I always say, get insured! Its always good to be safe.
